It is extremely encouraging that in less than 6 years CART-19 went from new clinical trial status to Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval for treatment. The very first FDA approved immunotherapy treatment was for an adult prostate cancer in 2010. In 2011, six-year old Emily Whitehead received the first pediatric trial of a novel immunotherapy treatment for relapsed B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. As a result, she went into full remission. She, and over 80% of kids that have followed during successful trials for ALL there and at other fine approved facilities remain in remission to this day. As most of these patients had no other option remaining, this is truly remarkable.
Make Some Noise: Cure Kids Cancer is extremely proud of our involvement in the funding for CART-19 made possible by our supporters. Our research foundation was just one-year old nationally when Founder Malcolm Sutherland-Foggio delivered a research grant check for $60,000.00 to Dr. Michael C. Jensen at the newly established Childhood Cancer Research Center at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Annually, we continue to contribute 100% of all Northwest donations received, along with frequent matching funds from our national headquarters to this promising work.
